Saadani National Park

Saadani National Park – Where the Bush Meets the Beach

Saadani National Park is Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary bordering the sea, offering a truly unique safari experience where the Indian Ocean meets African savannah. Located at the heart of the historic triangle between Bagamoyo, Pangani, and Zanzibar, the park spans 1,100 square kilometers of rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Wildlife by the Waves

What makes Saadani so exceptional is its rare blend of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Here, it’s possible to spot:

  • Elephants strolling near the beach

  • Buffalo, giraffe, warthogs, waterbuck, and reedbuck

  • Hippos and crocodiles along the Wami River

  • More than 30 species of large mammals

  • Green turtles nesting on the sand

  • Seasonal visitors like humpback whales and dolphins in the nearby ocean

With its abundance of reptiles and over 300 species of birds, Saadani is also a paradise for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.

A Unique Ecosystem

Gazetted as a national park in 2005, Saadani combines several conservation zones into one preserved ecosystem:

  • The former Saadani Game Reserve (established in 1969)

  • The former Mkwaja cattle ranch

  • The biologically rich Zaraninge coastal forest

  • The life-giving Wami River

The Zaraninge Forest, once managed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is one of the last remaining coastal rainforests in Tanzania and is renowned for its botanical diversity.

A Park with a Past

Saadani is steeped in cultural history. Local communities have long coexisted with the park. When the Saadani Game Reserve was created, village elders were involved in the process and compensated for lost farmland. The Mkwaja area tells another story, once part of a major cattle ranch operating from 1952 to 2000. Remnants like old paddocks and dams still dot the landscape, blending history with nature.

  • Climate: Hot and humid, typical of coastal Tanzania

  • Best time to visit: June to March (for wildlife and marine viewing)
