After an early breakfast, you will travel by vehicle to Soni, the starting point of your trek. From here, you begin your scenic hike into the Mazumbai Forest, enjoying the cooler mountain air and the gentle rhythm of nature.
Overnight: Mazumbai Hostel.
After breakfast, begin your hike through scenic coffee and tea plantations in the villages of Kwebua and Kwehangala. Along the way, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Mombo, Lushoto, and the historic Sakharani German Mission. Your trek ends in Bumbuli, a peaceful rural town.

Today’s hike leads you through Maduda village to the heart of the Mazumbai Forest Reserve, one of the last remaining unlogged rainforests in the West Usambara Mountains. A haven for birdwatchers and botanists, this rich and diverse forest offers a unique opportunity to spot rare birds, vibrant butterflies, and exotic flora.
Dinner and overnight: Mazumbai Hostel.
Depart Mazumbai in the morning and hike through Kwesine and Mgwashi villages toward Soni, passing terraced hills and vibrant local farms. Upon reaching Soni, you’ll transfer by vehicle to Lushoto. In the evening, enjoy a short walk to the Irente Viewpoint for a stunning sunset over the Maasai plains.
Dinner and overnight: Kakakuona Lodge, Lushoto.
Wake up early for breakfast at 6:00 am. After checking out, you’ll transfer by private vehicle back to Lushoto, arriving in time for lunch. From there, your driver will take you to Arusha or assist with onward travel arrangements.
