Mafia Island

Mafia Island – Tanzania's Hidden Coastal Gem

Mafia Island, the southernmost jewel of the Tanzanian coast, is a serene and unspoiled destination nestled at the heart of the largest marine park in East Africa—the Mafia Island Marine Park. Measuring approximately 20 km long and 8 km wide, Mafia offers a glimpse into the authentic Swahili coastal lifestyle, untouched by mass tourism.

Unlike its more popular counterparts, Zanzibar and Pemba, Mafia Island is politically part of mainland Tanzania, making it unique in both governance and character. With its peaceful fishing villages, coconut palm groves, and cashew nut plantations, Mafia retains a rustic charm reminiscent of Zanzibar 30 years ago.

The island’s interior is covered with lush bushland and light woodland, offering a mainland-like feel. Along the coastline, you’ll find mangrove forests instead of long sandy beaches, making Mafia less about sunbathing and more about exploration and marine biodiversity.

World-Class Diving and Marine Life

Mafia is best known as a top diving destination in Tanzania, attracting marine life lovers from around the globe. The creation of the Mafia Island Marine Park—now the largest protected marine area in the Indian Ocean—has made the island a haven for snorkelers and divers. The protected coral reefs are teeming with colorful fish, coral gardens, sea turtles, and even whale sharks in season.
